MMNZ unveils Outlander Sport Hybrid as electrified range expands

Mitsubishi Motors New Zealand (MMNZ) unveiled the Outlander Sport HEV to its dealer network and head office team at the Diamond Dealer awards on May 8, giving those closest to the brand the first look at an exciting new addition to its range.
The new compact SUV signals a significant step forward in the brand’s electrified journey, and a clear response to shifting demand from Kiwi drivers as more New Zealanders turn to electrified vehicles as a practical, lower-emissions alternative.
Known as Xforce in other global markets, Outlander Sport has already proven its appeal, with more than 77,000 units sold across Asia, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East since its debut in 2023.
Now, with its introduction to New Zealand in hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) form, MMNZ is bringing a new kind of electrified option to market – one designed to meet growing interest in fuel efficiency and lower emissions, without the need to plug in.
MMNZ Chief Operating Officer Tony Johnston said the timing reflects both changing customer priorities and a broader transition within the market.
“We’re seeing more and more New Zealanders looking at electrified options, but not everyone is ready to make the jump to plug-in or fully electric vehicles,” said Johnston.
“Outlander Sport HEV gives customers a highly efficient, practical SUV that delivers the benefits of electrification in a way that fits seamlessly into everyday life.”
A new chapter in Mitsubishi’s electrified story
While Mitsubishi has long been a leader in plug-in hybrid technology – led by the success of Outlander PHEV – the introduction of Outlander Sport HEV marks the brand’s first step into hybrid electric vehicles for the New Zealand market.
The system pairs a 1.6 litre MIVEC petrol engine with Mitsubishi’s latest-generation hybrid technology, automatically switching between EV, hybrid and engine drive modes to optimise efficiency and performance.
It incorporates multiple hybrid operating modes – including parallel and series hybrid configurations – with the system automatically selecting the most efficient set-up based on driving conditions and battery charge.
Designed to maximise electric drive in everyday conditions, the vehicle uses regenerative braking and intelligent energy management to reduce fuel consumption while maintaining smooth, quiet performance.
“The strength of this system is that it does the thinking for you,” said Johnston.
“It’s constantly adapting to how and where you’re driving, so you get the efficiency benefits of electrification without needing to change your habits.”
Designed for real-world Kiwi driving
Developed with everyday usability in mind, Outlander Sport HEV combines compact SUV proportions with the practicality and capability expected of a Mitsubishi.
Its ‘Silky & Solid’ design concept blends a refined, modern aesthetic with a strong and confident SUV stance. XLS and VRX are available in monotone colours – from bold finishes such as Volt Yellow to more understated tones like Graphite Grey – while VRX also offers distinctive two-tone options with a contrasting black roof.
A ground clearance of 212mm and a robust, high-riding design allow it to confidently handle everything from urban commutes to gravel roads and weekend escapes, while Mitsubishi’s latest platform architecture – with increased body rigidity, optimised weight distribution and finely tuned suspension – delivers a composed and comfortable ride across a range of conditions.
Selectable drive modes – including Normal, Wet, Gravel and Mud – are finely tuned to optimise traction and stability across different surfaces, helping maintain control in a range of road and weather conditions.
Drawing on Mitsubishi’s PHEV heritage, Outlander Sport HEV delivers smooth, responsive electric drive performance, with refined “linear acceleration” providing immediate power delivery for a seamless and effortless driving experience.
Inside, the focus is on space, comfort and technology. A wide instrument panel and high-quality materials create a more open cabin feel, supported by a 12.3-inch display system with wireless smartphone connectivity and a digital driver display that provides real-time energy flow, EV driving ratio and regeneration data. This gives drivers clear insight into how the hybrid system is operating and helping maximise efficiency in everyday driving.
An expansive panoramic glass roof, standard across the range, further enhances the sense of space and light within the cabin, while additional soundproofing contributes to a quieter, more refined driving experience.
Additional soundproofing and noise-reduction measures contribute to a quieter, more refined cabin, while available Yamaha-tuned premium audio delivers a more immersive in-car experience.
Advanced safety features – including the Outlander Sport’s signature adaptive cruise control, forward collision mitigation, blind spot warning and rear cross traffic alert, as well as the new addition, leading car departure notification – are standard across the range. VRX models take safety to the next level with a multi-around view monitor and moving object detection.
A pivotal year for MMNZ
The arrival of Outlander Sport HEV is just the beginning of what is shaping up to be a landmark year for Mitsubishi Motors in New Zealand.
Already the third most popular automotive brand in the country – and second in passenger vehicles – MMNZ is preparing to introduce a wave of new models in 2026, including a leading-edge battery electric vehicle (BEV) and another key model.
“These new models will open the door to entirely new segments for Mitsubishi in New Zealand,” said Johnston.
“It’s about making sure we’re offering the right vehicles for where the market is heading, while continuing to build on the strengths that have made us such a popular and reliable choice for Kiwi drivers.”
Importantly, Johnston confirmed that the ASX will remain an integral part of the Mitsubishi range.
“ASX continues to play a key role in our line-up and remains a very popular option for customers. Outlander Sport sits alongside it, giving buyers another choice within the compact SUV segment.”

Outlander Sport HEV is scheduled to arrive in New Zealand in the third quarter of 2026, with pricing and full specification details to be announced closer to launch.
Ahead of its official arrival, the only example in the country will be on public display at Fieldays at Mystery Creek (Site J42-J46) from June 10-13.
